I recently had a convo with my bestie, she has a tracker like one of those fitbit or phone watches? I’m probably the only person on the planet that doesn’t own one cos I could care less if I did 10000000000 steps lol (even though I do love my exercise ?). BUT what does interest me is the sleep tracker, it shows light sleep and deep sleep.
Obviously the longer the sleep the longer deep sleep you get, which is when your brain waves slow right down and we have spindles in the waves which create more permanent memories saved in our “inbox”.
It’s the deep stuff that “cleanses” your mind, glucose metabolism in the brain increases during deep sleep, supporting short-term and long-term memory and overall learning and development plus help our growth hormones develop a plethora of benefits for our health. (Which is why lack of sleep can be related to dementia).
I recently watched a TED talk where they said apart from it being a “non negotiable biological necessity” they also said 5 hour sleep for men will directly affect their size of testicles and their level of testosterone is that of someone 10 years older… ! Not good and it’s not any better for women and their reproductive health.
? How to get better quality sleep:
▪️less tv and blue light before sleep
▪️working at getting a regular pattern / schedule
▪️good sleep environment/ temperature, room should be around 18 Celsius
▪️regularity- go to bed and wake up at the same times (weekday or weekend)
▪️less alcohol and caffeine
? What do I do if I’m laying in bed and can’t sleep?
▪️ get out of bed and do something different because your body will start to associate your bed with a place where you don’t sleep. So do something and only go back to bed when you’re sleepy.
Humans are the only species who, deliberately deprive themselves of sleep for no reason. – I mean what a crazy wake up call!
